The State of Matt Waldman’s Social Media Accounts

Matt Waldman shares where (and why) you can find him and Rookie Scouting Portfolio content on social media.

The State of My Social Media: Where You Can Find Me…

For now, this is the order of where you can find analysis, links to my work, and my work/life social activity.

  • Bluesky: @mattwaldman.bsky.social
  • YouTube:@MattWaldmanRSPFilmRoom
  • X/Twitter: @mattwaldman

A significant gap in priority…

  • Instagram: @mattwaldmanrsp
  • Threads: @mattwaldmanrsp

If you want to know the “why,” read on.

The “Why” behind the Prioritization

I have been a Twitter/X user since 2009. I am one of the few who rarely complained about the app. For a few years, I devoted articles to maximizing your enjoyment of the app here and at Footballguys.

I’m not leaving X, but I am giving Bluesky a legitimate try. At least for the coming weeks, if not the rest of the season.

The bulk of my posts that have links to the RSP site, Footballguys, and YouTube content will be on Bluesky. I will experiment with sharing film analysis on Sunday and Monday at Bluesky and X/Twitter.

When I get around to it, I’ll occasionally share something on Threads and rarely on Instagram unless there’s a clamoring for it.

Politics Isn’t the Reason

My adoption of Bluesky has nothing to do with Elon Musk’s politics. I’m not a fan of echo chambers. I grew up with the notion that we’re here to protect the rights of everyone, including those whose views we disagree with.

Otherwise, we’re in danger of becoming the fascists we abhor. I believe in the theory that the political spectrum is shaped like a horseshoe — the extremes on either side have more in common than those with moderate views.

As you know, I’ve never been shy about sharing my social views. I’ve devoted a lot of time to discussing race in America as well as the need for us to protect children from sexual abuse. I have been doing so for close to two decades.

These are my views. I share them when I believe people could gain insights from my life experiences and perspective. I don’t do it for clicks. That’s self-aggrandizing behavior that smacks of narcissism.

If you’re bragging about how many followers you’ve lost for expressing a view or who is/isn’t following you because of your views, you’re helping yourself more than you’re helping others.

While I fear Bluesky will become/remain an echo chamber, I’m not there to share or read political stuff. I liked the different views I saw on Twitter — even if it was caustic at times. I know how to control my flow of information when needed.

Threads is an echo chamber. I’ve found Threads to be obsessed with X/Twitter while ironically filled with the same behaviors as X/Twitter but from only one point of view. I find that unhealthy.

Bluesky may go in that direction, but there’s only one reason why I may do less on X/Twitter if Bluesky works out.

The Algorithms

X/Twitter drops posts into a hole and covers them with dirt when your post has a link to outside content. I have my site and I used to get traffic to that site to read my content. Their algorithm is designed to dissuade people from leaving theirs to check out others.

I get it — X/Twitter wants you to be their content. They even pay you for your content monthly, but $200-$300 per month is not enough financial incentive to abandon what I do for a full-time living to support their efforts. Not that I was even making that kind of dough per month from them, but that’s what I hear many of the power users were getting before the algorithm changed.

I just want to share my analysis on the social media site and link to other places where you can find additional work. The social media content serves as a taste. My YouTube and site are the appetizers. My book is the meal.

Moving Forward

If you still like X/Twitter. I’ll be there. I still like it and I’m used to it. If you like Bluesky, I’m giving it a legitimate try and it’s possible it could replace X/Twitter long-term, but I have my doubts if the move to Bluesky turns out to be nothing more than a bunch of politically-motivated protesting of Elon Musk.

If my readers stay on X/Twitter, I’ll be splitting time. If they don’t, I’ll be going where most of them are.

I hope this is a sufficient explanation. It’s all I intend to offer!
