Matt Waldman examines the highs and lows (and the perceived lows) of Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence and shows you why his reputation is taking a temporary hit in the public eye that could make him a bargain for dynasty league GMs.
Is Trevor Lawrence regressing? Was the mulligan Lawrence received in the public eye for Urban Meyer’s Crimes Against Football deserved? Should we contextualize Lawrence’s turnover-heavy 2023 campaign?
These are all questions I answer about Lawrence in my recent Gut Check feature at Footballguys.
From a reality-based perspective, Lawrence’s long-term viability remains intact. While there are concerns about his offensive line and some mistakes from his surrounding talent that account for turnovers credited to Lawrence, there’s a worthwhile argument that the Jaguars’ arrival was proclaimed a year early.
Every year, rookie quarterbacks earn buzz that isn’t remotely commensurate to the reality of their landing spots and their development trajectories. Being proclaimed a generational prospect, Lawrence’s struggles — even if he shouldn’t have to own some significant data points attributed to him — make worthwhile headlines.
Lawrence was an above-average prospect compared to prospects with grades indicating a potential to become a future starter. When you watch the highs and lows (and the perceived lows) below, you’ll still see why the current concerns shouldn’t lead to an overreaction.
And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2023 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.
