Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines Auburn RB Tank Bigsby’s ability to work through tight creases.
Clips of running backs tearing through creases the size of highways accounts for roughly half of the draftnik highlights passing through my social media timelines every year. Elements of those clips can be substantive for scouting talent at the position, but it’s like admiring the icing and ignoring the cake.
The most essential parts of good running back performance most often occur between the exchange point with the quarterback and the entrance of the hole. This run from Bigsby last year against Penn State is a good example. His ability to make a quick athletic adjustment to the last-second problem of his far-side guard getting pushed into his lap is a notable skill that translates to the NFL standard of play.
After my initial four-game study of Bigsby, it’s clear that he has a lot of the conceptual and physical skills to contribute on Sundays. However, I think his ceiling of potential is lower than the buzz and this has to do with his mental discipline, size, explosion, and movement. I have more analysis on Bigsby in my queue, so stay tuned.
