Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room No. 316 WR Garrett Wilson (Ohio State): Save the Clapping for the Fans

Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines 2022 NFL Draft prospect, Garrett Wilson, the Ohio State receiver who should save the clapping for the fans.

Sudden, acrobatic, and promising with his routes, Wilson looks like a top prospect with one exception: He claps onto the football at the catch point.

As we’ve seen with Courtland Sutton, DK Metcalf, and Mike Williams, clapping onto the ball doesn’t have to be a death knell for an NFL prospect’s career.  However, it can be the difference between becoming a good NFL starter and an elite receiver.

If Wilson can limit this bad habit, if not eliminate it from his game, he could be among the most productive receivers of his draft class. If not, his flash will often result in frustration.

As it stands today, I appreciate Wilson’s game and the upside that’s possible, but give me Chris Olave who has the more fundamentally sound approach of the two Buckeye receivers.

Wilson’s route running may have spectacular moments but the speed and moves won’t matter in clutch moments if you can’t secure the ball.
