Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines the promising game of 2022 NFL Draft prospect Cole Turner, a 6-6, 240-pound tight end with release skills and great body positioning who must improve the position of his hands.
Gifted with height, length, and strong hands, Cole Turner’s high-point catches are a Mountain West Conference human highlight film. Get the ball within 4-6 feet of him in any direction and Turner has a shot at the catch.
Talk about a ready-made best friend on the field for a quarterback, Turner has the promise to become fast friends with any passer. There’s a lot of Mike Gesicki to Turner’s aerial game but unlike Gesicki,Turner wins at the line of scrimmage as a detached receiver.
Turner has grace, burst, footwork, and excellent location with his hands to counter the press of an opponent. If he can gain 10-15 pounds of muscle and retain his mobility, Turner could develop into an in-line tight end in the NFL. As it stands today, he’s a solid bet as an H-Back whose work at the line of scrimmge will be limited but his use as a deatched receiver will be extensive.
There’s Pro Bowl potential with Turner’s game if he lands in the right system and maximizes his talents. Among the several things Turner must address to develop his game to these heights, the most vital is his hands position with targets at chest height.
Watch D.K. Metcalf this year. Heck, watch him at Ole Miss, because the same inconsistency with how he positions his hands with specific target heights has dogged the receiver this year. If Turner can refine the way he attacks numbers-level targets, he can become a clutch option for an NFL passer.
