Matt Waldman’s RSP Film Room with Mark Schofield: QB Spencer Rattler #Oklahoma

Matt Waldman’s RSP Film Room welcomes TD Wire’s Mark Schofield back to the show for a review of Oklahoma’s aptly named Spencer Rattler, and why that name applies to the strengths and weaknesses of his game.

The feet tell you what the player is processing and how well he’s doing it. This is a point I’ve been making for years at the Rookie Scouting Portfolio, especially for quarterbacking.

Spencer Rattler’s game is as illustrative of this idea as any player that I’ve seen. When Rattler understands the coverage, his feet move in fluid and controlled fashion from one task to the next because he sees what’s happening and what should unfold next. When Rattler doesn’t understand the coverage, his feet are like an individual stammering and mumbling to find the next coherent thought to express when speaking in front of a croweded room.

As you’ll see from this hour-long look at Rattler performances against Florida, Iowa State, and TCU, Mark and I learn that Rattler has the arm, mobility, and vertical and quick-game accuracy to develop into an NFL starter. We also see pocket potential that’s superior to Baker Mayfield — a player where there’s grounds for comparison of playing style — but requires additional work on footwork technique and becoming fluent with a greater variety of coverage.

Rattler is a legitimate NFL prospect with starter upside. Will he encounter enough defenses that will challenge him like Florida in last year’s bowl game? I doubt it. It means that Rattler’s projection for development in the NFL has the potential for more ups and downs but there’s skill to mine that could lead to a productive career.
