Matt Waldman’s RSP Film Room No.188: WR Denzel Mims (Baylor)

RSP creator Matt Waldman examines 2020 NFL Draft prospect Denzel Mims, revealing how the receiver has made notable strides as a route runner during the past three years at Baylor.

If I ran the personnel side of an NFL organization, Denzel Mims has several qualities I covet from a wide receiver. Whether it’s taking or dishing out physical play, he’s comfortable with it. He has a refined sense of how to move economically in tight spaces and applies it well at the line of scrimmage, at the breakpoint of his routes, and after the catch.

Mims is consistent with his craft. When he attacks the football, rarely will you see his hands not framed in a tight and technically-sound position. His breaks are crisp, tight, and flat and his releases account for the actions of his opponent.

He’s a tremendous blocker who gets chest-to-chest with his assignment and maintains his position through multiple redirect attempts. You can tell he relishes the responsibility because he attacks with craft and intensity.

If Mims’ blocking doesn’t demonstrate the pride he takes in the craft of football, note his developments as a route runner in this video below that shares plays from various games during the past three years. It’s this notable improvement with his game that I love the most.

Physical, technically consistent, and continuously improving, Denzel Mims will be an RSP favorite in when the 2020 NFL Draft is in the books.
