Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room reveals some of the details of Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy’s story-telling prowess as a route runner.
Quality route running is a process of efficient and suspenseful story-telling. The defender, like many members of a story teller’s audience, knows the basic shape of the ending, but still suspends disbelief and gets sucked into the story despite seeing these plots play out over and over.
A good route runner knows when to be a minimalist and when to incorporate a lot of devices. On this route below, Jeudy manages to incorporate just the right amount of devices on this in-breaking route against an off-coverage defender in the slot.
Alabama’s quarterback doesn’t target Jeudy on the play, but the receiver’s route-device choices during his stem display a great amount of conceptual, technical, and athletic control in his game. There’s density to this short route and it’s a precise pattern that looks a lot simpler than it actually is.
