Matt Waldman’s Reads Listens Views (Saturday February 2, 2019)

Matt Waldman’s Reads Listens Views is back and devoted to a short list of recommended reads, listens, and views for the week.

Welcome

If you’re new to the Rookie Scouting Portfolio blog, welcome.  Every Friday, I post links to pieces that I’ve found personally compelling or to content I hope will eventually scratch that itch when I get around to it.

You may not like everything listed here, but you’re bound to like something.

Reads

Video: Giant Great White Shark Frolics With Divers I’ve been fascinated by sharks — especially Great White Sharks — since I saw Jaws as a seven-year-old. While shark cage diving is a thing I could do if I were game, I’m not sure how I feel about the whole thing. I wonder about the wisdom of some of these operations. Then again, watching Ocean Ramsey caressing a 20-foot great white by the name of Deep Blue in the open ocean is nutty — even if the explanation about the exceptional circumstances is compelling.

I’m also strangely envious.

Facebook Moves to Block Ad Transparency Tools — Including Ours: [Pro Publica’s] tool had let the public see exactly how users were being targeted by advertisers. The social media giant urged us to shut it down last year.

I’m hoping against the likelihood that I won’t find definitive proof that the RSP will need Facebook because I’d like to shut down all of my accounts.

Five Brilliant Graphic Novels that Just Happen to Star Talking Animals – Brian K. Vaughan’s Pride of Baghdad, a tale of zoo animals roaming Irag after American air raids post-9/11 looks like a must-read.
