Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines a short route from UTSA wide receiver Greg Campbell, Jr that successfully widens the path of his opponent. 

Too often, we skip over the simple things that go a long way toward revealing whether a player is a technically-sound prospect. Wide receiver Greg Campbell, Jr. is not a big name on any draft analyst’s radar — I watched him because I was studying former Oklahoma State receiver-tight end Keenen Brown, who I find an intriguing option who could earn a UDFA contract, and Campbell’s teammate, running back Jalen Rhodes.

Nevertheless, due diligence in my industry is important and I approached Campbell just like I would examine D.K. Metcalf, Nyqwan Murray, or Tyre Brady. One of the things I found instructive about Campbell’s game was elements of his route running.

This short route below does an excellent job of efficiently selling the potential of the fade. To the casual eye, it may appear that Campbell is delivering a bit of a shoulder fake and jab without great purpose. However, the more you understand the route tree and the complementary routes for each type of break, the more you begin to understand how receivers set up defenders.

Campbell’s name lacks juice and his stats aren’t noteworthy, but his game was good enough that it warrants more viewings. It was also a good reminder that simple moves are often the most effective.
