Matt Waldman’s Reads Listens Views is back and devoted to a short list of recommended reads, listens, and views for the week.
Welcome
If you’re new to the Rookie Scouting Portfolio blog, welcome. Every Friday, I post links to pieces that I’ve found personally compelling or to content I hope will eventually scratch that itch when I get around to it.
You may not like everything listed here, but you’re bound to like something.
Reads: NFL Next Gen Stats Introduction to Completion Probability
A friend of the site with qualifications and experience I trust greatly had good things to say about the direction the NFL is going with Next Gen Stats. He cited this piece in particular. Have fun!
Listens: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Seamus Blake’s tenor playing on this rendition of Charles Mingus’ beautiful tribute to Lester Young is some of my favorite work from a saxophonist in this medium of music. Blake and I are about the same age so I feel a bit of kinship with him as a former tenor player.
The way he shapes tones and incorporates layers of sounds while varying articulation that’s breathy and smooth at one moment and rough and raucous the next paints a stirring and beautiful musical portrait of Young, a complex figure in the music’s history.
