Matt Waldman’s RSP: Listens (August 10, 2018)

Matt Waldman’s Reads Listens Views is back in a slightly new form. This post is devoted to recommended listens of the week.

If you’re new to the Rookie Scouting Portfolio blog, welcome.  Every Friday, I post links to pieces that I’ve found personally compelling or to content I hope will eventually scratch that itch when I get around to it.

You may not like everything listed here, but you’re bound to like something.

Gregory Porter’s “Be Good (Lions’ Song)” is an excellent song with deep lyrics. The video is also a good telling of the lyrics.

Lakecia Benjamin is an excellent young saxophonist who does some fine work on the standard “Invitation”

This is five years old so if you want to hear something recent, here’s a full concert where her new quartet plays the music of John Coltrane. I’ve heard a different concert during her tour and it was good.
