Matt Waldman’s Rookie Scouting Portfolio examines the diagnostic and technical skill of 2019 NFL Draft prospect, Marquis Young’s pass blocking.
The Umass-Mississippi State game was my first look at Marquis Young. He’s a muscular back with NFL size and speed who can catch the football. What impressed me the most was his pass protection.
Here’s Young patiently sussing out a blitz pickup with two defenders approaching him off the edge. Young earns the right position to set up his block and he’s aware enough of his surroundings to give his teammate room to handle the other defender.
Young uses his hands well, times his strike with his feet, and takes a productive angle with his block. It’s work like this that creates a good first impression and indicates that Young is more than an athlete carrying the football. I’m looking forward to seeing more.
This analysis of Young is only the beginning of what you’ll find every year in the Rookie Scouting Portfolio publication.
