Matt Waldman’s Rookie Scouting Portfolio puts the hands of 2018 NFL Draft prospect Christian Kirk under the magnifying glass.
When we lay the hyperbole of highlight videos and award shows aside, all players have flaws. In the college game, top NFL prospects can get away with small flaws thanks to their exceptional talents.
However, every player in the NFL has certain skills that, on any given play, shine on the field like a brilliant light of truth. Shine that bright light through the NFL’s magnifying glass and even small flaws can be all the tinder necessary for player’s game to go up in flames.
Christian Kirk has been regarded as a top wide receiver prospect since last year’s draft. He’s earned impressive production as a slot receiver and return specialist. Whether it’s over the middle, the deep perimeter, against tight coverage, or away from his frame, Kirk has proven that he can catch the football.
Even so, his pass catching isn’t without flaws. While minor by college standards, if Kirk struggles early in his career, I wouldn’t be surprised if his technical lapses and inconsistencies as a pass catcher are the culprit.
