Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines the underrated skills of 2020 NFL Draft prospect Ty’Son Williams, a well-traveled college back who finished his career at BYU. 

Ty’son Williams could be the Isaiah Crowell of this class. A four-star recruit out of high school, Williams signed with North Carolina when the Tar Heels had a nationally-ranked team led by Mitchell Trubisky, Elijah Hood, and T.J. Logan.

Williams decided to leave the program for what he hoped would become a larger stage for his skills at South Carolina. Instead, Williams wound up in a running back carousel that worked behind a struggling Gamecocks offensive line. He earned starts during his two years in Columbia as an injury-substitute for Rico Dowdle and impressed with his burst, footwork, and finishing power.

However, the Gamecocks returned Williams to the bench when Dowdle got healthy and there were whispers among beat writers that ball security was an issue. If so, that whisper either came from multiple fumbles during practice that I didn’t see reported or the one fumble Williams had during his two years at South Carolina.

Last spring, Williams transferred to BYU as a graduate student and won over the staff and team, earning the starting job and posting impressive work during his first month with the Cougars against USC, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington. An ACL injury shelved Williams for the rest of the year and it will undoubtedly render him a UDFA in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Watch this boiler room below and you’ll see why Williams is a post-draft player of note. If his ACL rehab fits the nine-month projections we’re typically seeing, he should be ready to compete in training camp.

At best, Williams earns a spot at the end of the depth chart and works his way into playing time this year. At worst, he’s either signed to futures contract or placed on a PUP list. Give him 1-2 years and he has the talent to outplay a lot of draft picks at the position.
