Matt Waldman’s RSP Boiler Room examines a handful of plays from Washington quarterback Jacob Eason, a 2020 NFL Draft prospect with excellent arm talent whose decision-making is uncomfortably on that razor’s edge of aggressive and reckless.

Jacob Eason’s potential reminds me of what many expected from Jameis Winston—a big, strong-armed passer with pocket toughness and mobility to work outside the pocket by necessity and design.  As with Winston’s game, Eason leans on his arm talent to the point that his game is precariously balanced between aggression and reckless behavior.

Unlike Winston, Eason has better control of his footwork. His eyes and feet are in synchronicity far more often than Winston, whose feet lag behind his processing of information and it leads to sloppy play.

If we maintain the proper perspective about this quarterback class—there are only two quarterbacks in this class ready learn the game as first-year starters and the rest are projects with varying degrees of talent and game readiness—Eason is a compelling option who could work his way into a long-term role as an NFL starter. If he’s rushed into the job—and depending on how early he’s selected—all bets are off.
