We all have our biases.

Mine should be rather obvious by now. But if not, well, here goes:

I can be a bit of a softie when it comes to evaluating quarterbacks.

Perhaps it is due to my own background as a failure at the position. Perhaps it is due to lessons learned from the Scouting Academy with former NFL scout Dan Hatman, who taught me that the easiest thing to do is to crush a player. The tougher—but more important—thing to do is to identify and express what a player can do well.

As a result, my work tends to focus on the bright side of quarterbacks. The silver linings. If there is something they do well, that is what I will highlight in articles, videos, podcasts, etc.

Now, the curious case of Mr. Montez.

Steven Montez, the Colorado quarterback, has earned an invitation to the East-West Shrine Game. He will get a chance to demonstrate his traits for the assembled media members and scouting evaluators. His is a curious case, indeed, as these four plays from his game against Arizona indicate:

What quarterback will he be going forward? The aggressive passer who learns quickly from his mistakes and applies lessons nearly immediately, or the risk-averse quarterback who ultimately leaves big plays on the field? How he answers those questions will be the story of his career.
