Matt Waldman’s RSP Cast Ep.62: Lessons Learned from Past Evaluations

Matt Waldman discusses a decade’s worth of specific player evaluations that taught him important lessons for the Rookie Scouting Portfolio publication during this RSP Cast episode.

Mistakes are the fertilizer for the fruits of success. I knew a long time ago that I’d need a good shovel and some hip boots to deal with the muck that missed evaluations leave behind. They have come in handy over the years.

This week, I discuss nearly 30 player evaluations—most of them flawed—where I learned valuable lessons about scouting offensive skill players. I also explain how I define a “mistake” and why I wait a little longer to evaluate success or failure than the average fan.

Players include LeSean McCoy, Arian Foster, Russell Wilson, Steve Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, Doug Baldwin,  and several other quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends.
