Mark Schofield’s RSP Scouting Lens: Tyree Jackson and the HOSS Concept

RSP writer Mark Schofield shares why Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson should be generating the pre-2019 NFL Draft excitement that Josh Allen earned in 2018,

What if I told you the 2019 quarterback class might have a player similar to Josh Allen, without the early hype?

What if I told you that the quarterback in question might also display better processing speed, manipulation, touch and feel that Allen did when he was bandied about as a Top Five selection?

What if I told you that the quarterback in question plays for the University of Buffalo?

Apologies to ESPN and their “30 for 30” series, but no apologies at all for Tyree Jackson, who is a quarterback that you should definitely be paying attention to. Jackson is a bit raw around the edges but has impressive athleticism, arm talent, and size for a quarterback prospect, traits that definitely were associated with Allen. But where Jackson might differ from the Buffalo Bills’ rookie is in some of the other areas, such as processing speed, manipulation, and feel.

On this play against Rutgers, Jackson runs the HOSS Concept, a two-receiver route combination that consists of a hitch on the outside and a seam on the inside. This play is a staple in the Patriots’ offense, and is one of a myriad of reasons Rob Gronkowski is a household name. It has an answer for any coverage, provided the QB makes the right read.

Here, Jackson makes the right read:

Jackson is definitely a QB to watch. A Redshirt Junior, Jackson might not enter the NFL Draft for another season. But if he keeps making throws – and reads – like this one, then maybe he will.
