I haven’t seen enough of Collin Johnson to tell you if he has top-end speed. However, he has a number of compensatory skills that will earn him separation when defenders try to press him.

• Pacing
• Hip mobility
• Catch radius

Johnson is more than a big, raw athlete who leans on his physical traits. He has the suddenness at the line of scrimmage to tell a quick story with his footwork against press coverage. He varies his use of release maneuvers and uses effective combinations of these moves against defenders.

When the ball is in the air, Johnson has the length, hand-eye coordination, flexibility, and body control to earn targets arriving at awkward angles. A lot of receivers at Johnson’s height and weight are limited options. Based on these clips from the USC game in 2017, Johnson has a chance to develop into a primary receiver who can run the complete route tree.

This is the type of big receiver who may actually warrant early-round consideration.
