RSP Boiler Room No. 151 RB Jalin Moore (Appalachian State): Yards Through Contact and Agility

Matt Waldman’s Rookie Scouting Portfolio examines 2019 NFL Draft prospect RB Jalin Moore’s skill to earn yards after contact and his agility in tight quarters.

Jalin Moore is a freak. At least that’s what college football report Bruce Feldman has said for the past two seasons in his annual report on top football athletes in the NCAA. Feldman reports that Moore has excellent speed but it’s his ability to lift more weight than his 6’0″, 200-pound frame may indicate that seals his spot on the annual freaks list.

It’s a compliment for a player to make this list, but athletic ability without football skill, or impediments to attaining those skills, will prevent NFL-caliber athletes from becoming productive and reliable NFL players. Moore’s tape reveals that he’s not just an athlete running by opponents.

Two of several ways of determining the difference in a running back is a player’s pad level through contact and how well he processes impending obstacles and avoids them. Moore is skilled in both ways.

Moore displays here that good pad level combined with explosive burst produces power. He also demonstrates the processing talents to read and react to obstacles that are unexpected in succession. These skills alone don’t make Moore as good of a running back as he is an athlete. However, at this point in my evaluation process, it’s encouraging that he’s not a raw athlete.

This analysis of Moore is only the beginning of what you’ll find every year in the Rookie Scouting Portfolio publication.
