Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Lens: RBs Arian Foster and David Montgomery and Smart Footwork

While watching 2019 NFL Draft prospect David Montgomery exhibit intelligent footwork on a bounce-out, Matt Waldman’s Rookie Scouting Portfolio remembered Arian Foster do the same thing. It’s a good technique that running backs should learn.

While studying running back David Montgomery, I noticed him take consecutive steps with the same foot to set up a bounce-out against Oklahoma State (2:24 into the video).

The movement reminded me of something I saw from Arian Foster years ago and it didn’t take me long to find it. Note how Montgomery and Foster use this move as an efficient solution to set up a bounce outside.

In Foster’s case, he also uses it to sell the press so the edge defender climbing into the crease remains there.

Subtle and precise movement is the difference between the best and the rest. Foster, like Montgomery, wasn’t a speedster but he knew when and how to change direction. I’ll take that over speed every day of the week.
