Setting the Edge Podcast co-host Charles McDonald visits the film room with a great look at a savvy defensive tackle.
Atlanta Falcons analyst and Setting the Edge co-host Charles McDonald coaches defensive line play at the high school level. The position is one of his favorite places to begin every draft season. If you’re new to defensive line play, McDonald shares some excellent nuggets about the position as we examine important plays of Hawkeye tackle Jaleel Johnson’s portfolio against Iowa State, Wisconsin and Penn State.
Johnson is no Aaron Donald. He’s a lunch-pail prospect by comparison. So is Carolina Panther Kawann Short, an important cog in the Panther’s unit.
McDonald shows us Johnson’s anticipation of his competition’s game plan, hand usage, strength, coordination, and closing burst. We also see Johnson’s difficulty with double teams—and issue that appears more mental than physical.
