One of the old-school tenets of scouting quarterbacks is completion percentage. If a quarterback completes at least 62 percent of his passes, he gets to ride the scouting rollercoaster with NFL personnel men trained in the ways of Parcells.

It’s a handy data point, but it lacks more subtlety than it appears. Completion percentage doesn’t provide an true representation of accuracy, but somewhere along the line there’s been little distinction between a complete pass and an accurate pass.

It’s a conflation of two different things. Alek Torgersen has consecutive seasons with at least a 66 percent completion percentage and he’s never been below 60 percent during his college career at Penn.

But in an important area of the short passing game, Torgersen’s accuracy is lacking and it must get better if he wants to help his teammates do their jobs.
