It’s this time of the week where I share what I’ve been reading, listening, and viewing each week – football, fantasy football, and non-football.
Entertainment: John Coltrane – A Love Supreme
Whether it’s football, music, or any other part of life, change is a constant part of life. We tend to dislike what we don’t understand, but when we approach those things with an open mind and a willingness to learn do we gain an appreciation or love of something new to us. John Coltrane’s Album A Love Supreme is one of my favorite albums of all time. But the first time I heard it, I didn’t like it. It didn’t make sense to me at first.
But somewhere along the line – with additional life experiences (and no, not psychotropic drugs) – it began to make perfect sense. The emotional depth and intensity of what this quartet created is unmatched. It’s not always about amplifiers, feedback, and decibels.

Non-Football
Two executions occurred on Wednesday:
- Troy Davis, who was convicted of murdering a police officer.
- Lawrence Russell Brewer, convicted of murdering James Byrd, Jr.
Davis proclaimed his innocence until his death, citing a case of mistaken identity and pursuing a stay of education and retrial for many years. Brewer, a white supremacist who tied his victim to the back of a pickup truck and dragged him for miles up a gravel road, was guilty of perhaps the most brutal hate crime in the post-Civil Rights era.
I found it fascinating that the family of the murdered police officer attended the execution and wished to see Davis put to death to see justice serviced. Meanwhile, Byrd’s family did not attend the execution and pleaded with the government to give Brewer life in prison.
My heart goes out to all the families involved. However, the dichotomy of reactions among the two families makes a big statement about our country. I’ll let you think about what that statement is and draw your own conclusion.
